Edmonton winter car prep:
the honest checklist

The first −30 morning separates prepared cars from tow-truck calls. This is the checklist we run through on every winter-prep visit at Fast Car Service — battery, block heater, fluids, tires — plus the stuff you can safely skip.

Every January, the first real cold snap fills our parking lot with the same casualties: dead batteries, gelled fuel filters, block heaters that stopped working sometime in May and nobody noticed. Almost all of it is preventable in one visit. Here's what actually matters.

Battery: the number-one winter killer

A battery loses about a third of its cranking power at −20°C, and your engine wants roughly double the effort to turn over. A battery that was 'fine' in October is a no-start in January. We load-test, not just voltage-check — a weak battery reads 12.6V on a multimeter and still can't crank.

Honest rule: if your battery is 4+ years old and the load test is marginal, replace it before January. $220 beats a 7 a.m. boost call on a work day.

Block heater: test it before you need it

Most Edmonton cars have one; most owners haven't tested it since purchase. The cord end corrodes, the element burns out, the timer dies. Plug it in for 20 minutes and feel for warmth at the block, or bring it by — checking it takes us five minutes. If you park outside, also check the extension cord you plan to use; cracked insulation on an outdoor cord is a real hazard, not a footnote.

Fluids: three that can't freeze

  • Antifreeze — we test to −40°C. Coolant that's crept toward a weak mix freezes in the radiator and things crack. A flush is $150; an engine block is not.
  • Washer fluid — summer mix freezes solid on the windshield at −30. Switch to −40-rated now, and run the system until the new fluid reaches the nozzles.
  • Oil — your engine needs its winter-rated viscosity to turn over at −35. If you're due anyway, do it before the cold hits; our winter prep package bundles oil, battery test and the rest for $349.

Tires: the temperature argument for winter rubber

Below +7°C, all-season compound hardens and grip drops measurably — this is physics, not marketing. If you drive daily through winter, proper winter tires stop measurably shorter. If you insist on all-seasons, at least check tread depth honestly: below 4/32" winter performance is poor even on dry pavement.

And tire pressure drops ~1 PSI per 5°C — the TPMS light that scares you on the first cold morning is usually just physics asking for air.

What you can skip

  • 'Winter fuel additives' for gasoline cars — our fuel is already winter-blended.
  • Premium fuel 'for cold starts' — octane doesn't help cranking.
  • Covering the battery — does almost nothing; the blanket era ended with carburetors.

The 10-minute self-check

Before your visit: lights all working (road salt eats bulbs), wipers streak-free, washer fluid topped, block heater cord intact, spare key located (locks freeze; don't learn this at −30 with keys inside). Our electrical check covers block heater, battery and charging in one slot if you want it all verified at once.

Winter doesn't break cars in Edmonton — it reveals the maintenance that got skipped all summer.

Winter questions

If you drive daily through winter — yes, the stopping distance difference below +7°C is real and measured. If the car mostly sits and you can skip icy days, good all-seasons with honest tread depth can carry you through.

30–60 seconds, then drive gently. Long idling doesn't warm the engine efficiently and dilutes the oil with fuel. Plug the block heater in for 2–3 hours instead — cheaper and kinder to the engine.

October. After the first cold snap everyone calls at once and the schedule fills — the week before −30 is the week you can't get in.
